This class is presented by a police officer with an extensive background in the information technology field. This course is designed to introduce law enforcement personnel with a basic knowledge of computers to the world of cyber crimes and their investigations. Some of the topics that will be covered examples of cyber crimes; recognizing potential evidence in cyber crimes; identifying types of electronic hardware that can potentially contain forensic evidence; finding on-line evidence and internet crimes; and identifying physical crimes that have a cyber crime attachment. Students will be introduced to the basics of setting up a computer/network setup for on-line investigations, collecting and preserving evidence; and introduced to on-line investigative tools. Students will get hands-on training in deciphering emails, tracing domain names and ISP numbers.
Note: Students are encouraged to bring a wireless enabled laptop computer to the class, however, it is not necessary to have a laptop to attend the class.
