The purpose of this training session is to prepare the investigator in the proper response and investigation of an officer involved shooting incident. When an officer shoots a citizen, the police department can expect a blitz of media attention, and can expect that the agency or some outside agency will conduct a criminal investigation. The police department must also recognize that it has a responsibility to conduct an administrative investigation and that a lawsuit will in all likelihood follow. During all of this, the police department must ensure the welfare of the involved-officer.
