Greg MintonDwight Dexter Mathis serves as the Regional Director for the Texas Department of Public Safety, Region VII, Capitol Complex, in Austin. Regional Director Mathis currently works closely with elected and appointed State officials to oversee the administrative and operational law enforcement and security activities at the State Capitol, Capitol Complex, and Statewide Security Programs.

Regional Director Mathis most recently served as the Assistant Division Director for the Texas Highway Patrol Division. He began his career with DPS in 1987 as a Highway Patrol Trooper stationed in Bay City. In June of 1997, Mathis promoted to Sergeant and transferred to the Webster/Clear Lake duty station. He then promoted to Lieutenant, and in September of 2003, transferred to Bryan, where he later promoted to Captain in 2006. In June of 2011, Mathis promoted to Major and was assigned to DPS Headquarters in Austin, and later transferred to Houston. In June of 2017, he was appointed to Assistant Chief of the Texas Highway Patrol.

Mathis earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Political Science from Sam Houston State University in 1986, after beginning his studies at Prairie View A&M University. Mathis is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy in 2008, as well as the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association. In December of 2017, he completed the 36th Governorís Executive Development Program.

Regional Director Mathis believes in Professional Development through continuous Training, Accountability, Servant Leadership, Mentoring, Community Involvement, and Leading by Example.
